Native vs Cross-Platform: Choosing the Right Approach

Native vs Cross-Platform: Choosing the Right Approach

When planning a mobile app, one of the first decisions is native or cross-platform. We have built and maintained both, and the right answer depends far less on which technology is better — neither is — than on what your app has to do and who will keep it running afterwards.

What native actually means

Native apps are built for one platform with that platform's own tools: Swift for iOS, Kotlin for Android. You get the full device API surface the day a feature ships, the best achievable performance, and interfaces that behave exactly as users of that platform expect, because they are built from that platform's own components.

The cost is duplication. Two codebases, two builds, two sets of bugs, and either two specialist developers or one who context-switches. Every feature is specified once and built twice.

What cross-platform actually means

React Native and Flutter let one codebase produce both apps. In practice you share most of the logic and much of the interface, with a small amount of platform-specific code where it is genuinely needed.

The saving is real but usually overstated. It is closer to thirty or forty per cent of total cost than to half, because design, testing, store submission, backend work and project management do not halve just because the code is shared. What you reliably do get is one team, one release cycle, and features that arrive on both platforms at the same time.

Choose native when

  • The app is graphics-intensive — games, AR, heavy real-time media.
  • You need deep or early access to hardware: advanced camera control, Bluetooth peripherals, background location, health data.
  • Performance is the product, not a quality of it.
  • You need day-one support for a new OS feature, rather than waiting for the framework to catch up.
  • The budget genuinely supports two codebases for the app's whole life, not just its build.

Choose cross-platform when

  • You need to launch on both platforms at once, on one budget.
  • The app is mostly screens, forms, lists and API calls — which describes most business apps honestly.
  • One team has to own it afterwards.
  • Consistent branding across platforms matters more than matching each platform's native conventions exactly.
  • You expect to iterate quickly after launch and want both stores moving together.

The question most people forget: who maintains it?

Apps are not like websites. Both platforms ship OS updates every year that break things, tighten permissions, and change store requirements. An app nobody maintains does not gradually age — it stops working, usually without warning, and often at the worst moment.

This is where the native/cross-platform decision has its real long-term cost. Two native codebases mean two lots of that maintenance forever. If your organisation does not have a plan for who does that work, cross-platform is very often the more honest choice regardless of the technical merits.

A decision you can make in five minutes

Ask three questions, in order:

  • Does the app's core value depend on device hardware or raw performance? If yes, native. If no, continue.
  • Do you need both platforms, and is the budget one budget? If yes, cross-platform. If you only need one platform, native for that platform is perfectly reasonable.
  • Who owns this in two years? If the answer is one small team or one supplier, favour the single codebase.

Most business apps end at cross-platform on the second question, which is why we build most of ours in React Native or Flutter.

"The best technology choice is the one that aligns with your business goals, not just the latest trend."

What we would tell you on a call

We would ask what the app does, who uses it and how often, what it connects to, and who will look after it. If the answers point to native, we will say so even though it is the more expensive build — recommending cross-platform for an app that needs native is how projects fail eighteen months in. If you want that conversation about a specific idea, that is where our app development work begins.
